Employees visit Malham, North Yorkshire

We had a busy itinerary to ensure that we made the most of the breath-taking remote village. The first day consisted of a long walk to Malham Tarn, a glacial lake and the highest lake in England, this lake being one of only eight upland alkaline lakes in Europe! Then we walked to Malham Cove, which is a huge curving amphitheatre shaped cliff formation of limestone rock, that also affords brilliant views down to the dale towards Malham and beyond.

After a well-needed rest in one of the local pubs, we then continued on to Janet’s Foss a small waterfall. The pool was traditionally used for sheep dipping, an event which took on a carnival air and drew the village inhabitants for the social occasion. Lastly, we reached Gordale Scar, a limestone ravine 1.6 km northeast of Malham. It contains two waterfalls and has overhanging limestone cliffs over 100 metres high. The gorge could have been formed by water from melting glaciers or a cavern collapse. To end our busy day, we all enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner at the Lister Arms in Malham village!

On the second day, before we headed home, we visited the Ribblehead Viaduct that carries the Settle-Carlisle Railway across Batty Moss in the valley of the River Ribble at Ribblehead. The viaduct, built by the Midland Railway is a Grade II listed structure. The land underneath and around the viaduct is a scheduled ancient monument. The remains of the construction camp and navvy settlements are located there.

Overall our weekend away was a great way to all be together to celebrate the success we’ve had over these last 12 months!
