The Effects of Humidity on Indoor Air Quality

Relative humidity refers to the percentage of water vapor in the air at a given temperature, compared with water vapor that the air is capable of holding at that temperature.

When indoor air quality is reviewed, environmental researchers consider the available ventilation, the freshness in the air, the control of pollutants, and the humidity levels in the rooms that can cause inadequate hygiene.

It is not adequate for relative humidity within an indoor space to be too high or too low, as it can result in health issues, discomfort, and less-hygienic atmospheric conditions. If indoor humidity is not properly maintained at optimal levels, adverse health effects can occur.

According to reports, the human body is most comfortable indoors when the relative humidity of an area ranges between 30-to-50 percent. If the indoor humidity level reaches 60 percent or above, mold and mildew can begin to form and pose health risks to those exposed.

However, human health is also at risk when humidity levels reach below thirty percent. Less than thirty percent of relative humidity can cause static electricity issues, irritation of the skin and eyes, and reduce an individual’s resistance towards upper respiratory illnesses.

Although air infiltration differs by home and rates depend on factors such as weather, construction materials, and activities of the occupants, as the air remains indoors longer, humidity and pollutants linger longer.

To keep indoor air quality high:

  • Open windows to provide ventilation and reduction of moisture from cooking and bathing
  • Use an air-to-air heat exchanger, as it dehumidifies houses in places where the climate is cold
  • Use a dehumidifier in the summer and a humidifier in the winter
